New York

Okay. First, a HUGE thank you to Uncle Joe for letting us stay at his swank digs on the Upper West. It made the trip to NYC a million times more affordable, we loved NOT being in a tiny overpriced hotel room, and we especially loved being in the neighborhood where Chase was a little guy. Second, our old neighborhood that you all remember - West Village meets meatpacking district - now looks like Reston Town Center. Outdoor cafes planted around poor little Hogs & Heifers Saloon. The old train tracks converted to a groovy green, herb-gardened High Line. Street vendors, the new Whitney, TOURISTS. Where I used to take my dry-cleaning (walking carefully over cobblestones slick with bloody animal fat, nodding hello to the cross-dressing hookers and the guys hauling sides of beef) you can now buy $1000 shoes. Holy cow (carcass), how the city has changed. What hasn't: its fabulousness. The dog-pee smell of summer. The grittiness of Chinatown and Little Italy. Zabars. The thrill in your chest. Chase has fallen in love. But it was nice to get home to the big open green of the Commonwealth. The trip brought back many awesome memories of our many years there, but we're definitely Virginians now. And Chase and Tyler had a BLAST. Perfect way to celebrate a couple of birthdays! And PS, Grandma and Grandpa took amazing care of Cole and Caroline. To thank them, we gave them strep.
