Big Boy Butterflies
Chase gets VERY nervous before football scrimmages and games. It builds up over the course of the week, and by the weekend, he's worked himself into a gastointestinal frenzy, convinced he hates football and is going to let everyone down. Then he starts playing and forgets everything. Ninety minutes later, he's saying he wants to play football for life (let's hope not, thinks his mother). Sunday's game, the first official game of the season, with cheerleaders and everything, was no different. I had to all but force him into the car before the game. Chase is number 84 on the Chargers, and we beat the Rams 31 to 6. One of the team moms got these shots, and the first one up there made the "picture of the week" on the team's web site: Chase's sack at the one-yard line that resulted in a nine-yard loss for the Rams. It wasn't all fun and games, of course - later in the game, while playing cornerback, he attempted an arm tackle and failed . . . hence the Rams' six points. But he's learning every day, and his coaches told me he's shaping up to be one of the best players on the team. We're very proud of him - not for the tackles and praise, but for fighting those nerves every week and walking into that game. He's got guts I've never had. It's one of the things I've always admired about my son, and it's uniquely his.
