Chase turns six . . .

Chase turned six on May 29th, and I still can't believe it. We were lucky to have our friends Allen and Hopie, with their kids Porter and Liza, in town the night before, so we had a fun birthday breakfast with everyone on Friday morning before they headed up to the Delaware beaches. That night, Chase celebrated with eleven kindergarteners and rising kindergarteners in superhero garb and/or pajamas, with Return of the Jedi on TV, and pizza, popcorn and cake scattered about the playroom. The kids had a great time. Cole gave Chase a "Wolverine Electronic Claw" for his birthday (and his friend Will was kind enough to get him one for his other hand - I need to videotape Chase doing his signature double-fisted Wolverine move - it is hilarious). We completed the look with lots of hair gel and eyebrow-pencil mutton chops. It was so cute. And slightly scary. Caroline continues to grow, smile, coo and flirt with us. In upcoming news, Cole intends to give his pacifier to the Pacifier Fairy on June 18th in exchange for Better Batter Baseball . . .

dried cherries and pistachios - feeling in the silence the communal rise and fall of little sleeping bellies - the lazy drone of the hamster wheel - pink roses on white tablecloth - preschool teachers - steady meditative slicing of tomatoes while two children nap - dogwood blooms - sun blasting through storm clouds - the way usborne books feel in my hands - shirtless chase reading to me as i clean up breakfast dishes - caroline's baby dinosaur voice - the startling coo of a dove that's landed on the window sill just inches from where i'm rocking caroline - aztec hot chocolate after cold rainy 8 a.m. baseball games -
